Sonoma Raceway, in Sonoma CA is where the 2018 SCCA National Run Offs are to be held in mid-October and Michele Abbate and the GRRRacing team took to the races in the #30 CRR Cybersight GT1 stock car with full support from car owner Tim Adolphson and Crew Cheif Craig Raudman.
“It’s been about 6 years since I’ve race at Sonoma, so I’m looking forward to using this weekend as a refresher for the track. I am also looking forward to getting some more seat time in the stock car; it’s so much different to drive than our production FRS chassis, I really enjoy every lap behind the wheel”.
Friday offered one test session and a qualifying opportunity. Abbate was faced with a loose car and was working hard to get the traction needed in the corners. She qualified 6th in GT1 and started Saturday’s race mid pack. Keeping consistant and working on her lines, throttle control, and car control she finished the race with a 4th place finish. “I made a few mistakes out there, but unfortunately sometimes you have to reach the limit when your pushing hard. I’m stoked to have earned the points that we did today and was very happy to see that checkered flag!” Abbate shared.
Sunday’s feature race was a 35 minute race and Michele wanted to focus on driving clean and hitting her marks. “I am working on being smooth onto the throttle and trying to set the nose on corner entrance. It’s amazing how much differently you have to adjust as a driver when stepping into one of these cars. They are extremely powerful but take a lot of patience to get through the corner. I am truly having a blast developing new skills every time I get behind the wheel.” Abbate finished Sunday’s race witha 6th place finish, grateful for the experience and taking a ton of knowledge home with her.
The GRRRacing team continues to attack all angles of motorsports as the year continues on. Next month Abbate will join up with teammates Rookie Motorsports for the Vegas to Reno race for the Best in the Desert series. Also, the Scosche GRRRacing Scion FRS will be getting its freshly built motor from MotoIQ to give it another shot at gaining some data and results with the fully built motor. Lastly, the GRRRacing daily driven BRZ will be prepped for a full LS1 swap with a T56 transmission, but first, Michele and Anthony will be tearing the motor down to put their own touches to the build!
Stay tuned for more from the GRRRacing team!
